The public education system in South Africa would get an “F” for failing. Despite the country spending over 21% of the national budget on education (2013), research shows that students leaving the third grade only have a rudimentary grasp of reading, forcing parents to enroll their children in costly private schools for high-level education. SPARK Schools is a network of eight affordable, private schools that reduces the costs of education by utilizing a “blended learning” model — a combination of teacher instruction and computer-aided learning at the same per child cost as South Africa’s public schools. SPARK Schools hopes to operate 64 schools by 2023 to serve approximately 64,000 students in the country before expanding throughout Africa and internationally.
