Endeavor Gala Honoree Steve Case sat down with a small group of Endeavor Entrepreneurs for an intimate session on Friday November 4, 2016. The entrepreneurs, who hailed from various industries including digital health, consumer goods and F&B, guided the discussion and had the opportunity to ask Steve questions about his own entrepreneurial journey.
Steve’s entrepreneurial career began in 1985 when he co-founded America Online (AOL), catalyzing the worldwide adoption of a media that has transformed business and society. At its peak, AOL handled nearly half of all internet traffic, was the first ever Internet IPO, and was among the top performing stocks of the 1990s. Today, Steve remains highly dedicated to helping entrepreneurs through Revolution LLC and the Case Foundation.
Fielding questions from entrepreneurs, Steve highlighted his three well-known “P’s” — people, passion and perseverance — discussing the importance of building the right team and pursuing what you love. Mariquel Waingarten, co-founder of Hickies, a company that is redefining the shoelace, asked Steve how he was successful in changing the behavior of the world. At the time of founding AOL,only 3 percent of people were online, and they were only online an hour a week. Citing that AOL was an “overnight 10-year-success”, Steve emphasized the importance of persevering. Among other topics, Steve also discussed investing in the healthcare space with several of the entrepreneurs in attendance from that industry.
At the heart of Endeavor’s model is the belief that connecting founders with mentors is a key component of growing entrepreneurial ecosystems by inspiring future generations to innovate, take risks and “think big.” With founders hailing from companies in various stages of development, the event reinforced this crucial role mentors play in multiplying the impact of entrepreneurs.
In addition to expressing enthusiasm for the opportunity to meet Steve, the entrepreneurs at the event were also inspired by one another. One entrepreneur in the room acknowledged that his daughter had compared him to Globant co-founder Guibert Englebienne, and had encouraged him to reach the level of success that Globant has. Guibert and fellow co-founder Nestor Nocetti both attended the event.
Endeavor’s network uniquely facilitates this effect by supporting role models, connecting mentors to entrepreneurs, and encouraging entrepreneurs to share their stories with others in their community and across the world.
Steve reflected on this meeting during his panel with Endeavor Global Chair Edgar Bronfman, Jr. at the Gala later that evening, posing the question of how entrepreneurs can lift up their countries and communities while building their own companies.
