South Africa, Technology
Osvaldo Lucho and his wife Carla noted the poor quality and prohibitively high price of broadband internet outside of Brazil’s urban centers. Together they founded the telecom company Gigalink in 2004. Using a low-cost cable developed and patented by Osvaldo, Gigalink is able to install internet infrastructure at a low cost. As a result, the company can target small to medium cities where major ISPs often choose not to go.
Osvaldo and Carla met at Pontifica Universidade Catolica do Rio, and upon graduating the coupe started their first company. After closing Nova Friburgo, the couple opened Solutec, an IT company.
In response to the growing demand for high-speed internet in Nova Friburgo, Osvaldo began to develop a broadband solution in 2002. Fiber optic infrastructure in Brazil had grown tremendously over the last years, but connecting the internet backbone to the end user was still fairly underdeveloped. Osvaldo started experimenting and by the end of 2004, the couple spun off Gigalink from Solutec.
Gigalink currently provides broadband Internet to households and small businesses, but the market potential is great. Targeting low-density areas, Gigalink’s technology has the potential to bring affordable broadband Internet access to millions of Brazilian households.
